Argentina World Cup Bound With Messi’s Hat Trick

Ben Migono / October 11, 2017

After Argentina was on the fringe of being on the outside looking into the next World Cup, things finally took a positive turn on October 11th thanks for a magical performance from none other than Lionel Messi. His three goals counted for his side’s total tally for the night as they defeated Ecuador 3-1 while booking their ticket to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Argentina say in sixth spot following a 0-0 draw with Peru last week so goals weren’t exactly easy to come by. And when Romario Ibarra scored for Ecuador, in 45 seconds no less, Argentina’s hopes looked like they were dashed thanks to a team that didn’t even have a chance at qualifying.

However, Messi had other plans and was able to score two goals in eight minutes to turn the tides completely. In the 62nd minute, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner completed his hat trick and ensured his country will be playing for World Cup gold.

With the win, their sixth place spot became a distant memory and now they join Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia in the automatic qualification spots.

Let’s be honest, the World Cup is better with Messi in it than without. Although Argentina may not be favored to win, at least we might get a chance to witness some more Messi magic when it matters most!
