Batman: The Animated Series Coming in HD on DC Universe

Steve Porter / July 12, 2018

DC Universe is still in beta testing, but the new streaming service (and digital comics library) has already promised an impressive slate of original content and classic series. The latest announcement from DC? The new service will feature Batman: The Animated Series in HD.

The classic cartoon from Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski is a legend among fans, featuring visually striking Art Deco-inspired animation, a talented cast of amazing voice actors, and mature storytelling that cemented Batman’s place as the most popular super-hero of all time. It was only on the air from 1992 to 1995 but remains popular among fans. Now, it will be available for the first time in HD on DC Universe.

We still have a ton of questions, such a whether or not this will be a truly remastered edition of the iconic show or just an increase in resolution. We have to mention that HD upscaling might reveal the limitations of a show designed for SD. For example, we would hate to see Batman: The Animated Series cropped to 16:9 HD aspect ratio from the original 4:3 TV aspect ratio, as that might cut out material. Hopefully, a carefully edited HD edition would avoid these problems.
