Gordon Hayward Breaks Ankle In NBA Season Opener

Ben Migono / October 17, 2017

Gordon Hayward, a key acquisition for the Boston Celtics for their 2017-18 campaign, is about to be out of commission for the foreseeable future. In less than six minutes on the court as a member of the Celtics, Hayward went up to get a loose ball near the rim and collided with two Cleveland Cavaliers players in midair and fell awkwardly resulting in a horrific leg injury.

If you can brace yourself, watch the clip here:

The 6-8 swingman who signed with the Celtics over the summer was in obvious pain after he came down. Play had to be stopped in order for medical staff to treat him.

As other players saw Hayward’s injury, many were left with shocked reactions. Just take a look at Cleveland’s bench.

Other horrific injuries that come to mind include Paul George’s leg injury in 2014 during a USA Basketball scrimmage, Jorge Garbajosa’s ankle injury in 2007 and Shaun Livingston’s knee injury earlier that same year.

Hayward was taken off the court on a stretcher and received well wishes from teammates and opponents, including Lebron James:

No one would have thought this would happen on opening night – especially for a team like Boston. Hoping Hayward has a speedy recovery!
