‘House of Cards’ is Back With a Chilling New Promo

Steve Porter / September 7, 2018

Speculation swirled about the fate of Netflix’s House of Cards after the show’s lead, Kevin Spacey, was the subject of disturbing sexual assault allegations last year. The hit political thriller seemed destined to be pushed in front of a subway car and buried, but Netflix decided to take a different tack and renewed the show for a sixth and final season starring Robin Wright as the new lead.

While we knew that Spacey’s character has been written out of the show in a bold attempt to salvage the series, we didn’t know how blunt Netflix was going to be until now. Other shows have struggled to explain losing a major actor or even swapping out a lead performer. Under other circumstances, the producers and writers might have put the unwanted character “on a bus” out of town, in a coma, or used editing and camerawork to disguise their face. Not House of Cards.

Frank Underwood is dead and, literally standing over his grave, his canny wife Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) has taken his place. In a chilling scene that reads, whether intended or not, as a savage indictment of Kevin Spacey’s career, Claire stars down at her dead husband’s grave and says, “I’ll tell you this, though, Francis. When they bury me, it won’t be in my backyard. And when they pay their respects, they’ll have to wait in line.”

House of Cards returns on November 2.
