Joss Whedon Will Direct Solo Batgirl Film

Steve Porter / April 1, 2017

That’s right, the same Joss Whedon who directed Marvel’s Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to jump ship to write, produce and direct a solo Batgirl film for the DC Extended Universe. While Batgirl has made cameos in other films before, this will be the first time that she gets the full female lead treatment. Whedon is no slouch when it comes to female leads as he created the widely popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon, first appeared in 1967 in DC Comics. She’s the daughter of James Gordon aka the police commissioner of Gotham City. The DC Universe is already pushing their first movie to star a female lead as Wonder Woman is played by Gal Gadot and set to hit theaters on the 2nd of June.

In the Batman TV series from the 1960’s, Batgirl was portrayed by Yvonne Craig alongside Adam West as the Caped Crusader and Burt Ward as Robin. More recently, Alicia Silverstone played the role in 1997’s Batman & Robin with George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell who played Batman and Robin, respectively. In 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie, Rosario Dawson was the voice of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
