Netflix Testing Choose Your Own Adventure-Style Programming

Steve Porter / June 30, 2017

Remember those ‘choose your own adventure’ books when you were little? The one’s where you read a few pages and jump to a different page depending on the choices you make? Well, Netflix is introducing the concept to the small screen.

They’re calling them interactive movies, but more specifically, “narrative episodes,” and they’ll allow viewers to decide how the story unfolds. Unfortunately, for the majority of us, the stories are going to cater to children.

The first episode to be released will be Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale – and is actually available to watch right now. This is a standalone episode that’s separate from The Adventures of Puss in Boots television series.

On July 14th, Netflix will release their second narrative episode called Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile. Like their first, this episode will also be a standalone episode that’s separate from the Buddy Thunderstruck television series. A third episode called Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout will be released at some point in 2018.

Netflix has stated that these episodes will be supported for most iOS devices and TV experiences. And while we don’t know what other series or properties will get the interactive treatment, the streaming giant indicated that children’s programming was a logical place to start.
