Neymar Becomes Most Expensive Soccer Player In History

Ben Migono / August 7, 2017

Neymar will no longer be suiting up for FC Barcelona at Camp Nou as he will be lining up for Paris Saint-Germain for a reported 222 million euros ($262 million) last Thursday.

How expensive was this?

Well, the last record holder was held by Paul Pogba which was paid by Manchester United for 105 million euros (or $116 million). In Neymar’s case, his transfer fee was more than double.

PSG will have Neymar’s services until June 2022 after signing a five-year contract. The striker is 25-years old. After playing alongside one of the best (if not the best) players in the world, Lionel Messi, Neymar will try to replicate the success he enjoyed in Barcelona to his new club.

In four seasons for FCB, Neymar has scored 105 goals, winning the Champions League once, Club World Cup, the Spanish league titles twice and won the Copa del Rey three times.

PSG has never even won the Champions League before. So, why did Neymar choose to leave?

During his introduction by the club, he used the words “competitive” and “most ambitious”. Knowing how much success will mean to the club and its fans, he wants to be the centerpiece to lead them to glory.

ESPN FC stated that Neymar will make around €30m after taxes a year and will get a big fat signing bonus on top of his annual salary.
