Ruby Rose Will Play Batwoman on The CW
She is the night!
The CW announced on Tuesday that Ruby Rose will play Batwoman in an upcoming series. She will debut on a four-part crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow in December; the series is intended for release in 2019.
Batwoman was reintroduced in 2006 as lesbian superhero Kate Kane, one of the many gritty defenders of the grim streets of Gotham City. She was DC’s first out lesbian with a title of her own; now, Ruby Rose is set to play the first lesbian superhero in a lead role, ever! Rose is also a member of the LGBTQ community and announced on Instagram that she’s thrilled and honored to take the part.
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
The 32-year-old Australian actress is known for Orange Is the New Black in 2015 and demonstrated her action cred in xXx: Return of Xander Cage in 2017. She’s definitely demonstrated a fluid physicality, intense stare, and smoldering gaze—ideal for a masked vigilante. Our only concern? She’ll need to work on her accent! Sorry, Oz—we’re not ready for an Aussie Batwoman. That’s just a bridge too far.
