Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Theme Park Will Open Summer 2019

Eric Walker / May 23, 2018

Have you ever wanted to fly your own starship or hold a lightsaber? Your opportunity is closer than you think. Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge amusement park will offer guests a chance to visit a galaxy a long time ago and far, far away. Disney has now announced that the first park will open in Summer 2019.

When the Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for over $2.2 billion it wasn’t just for the movie rights. Disney wants to capitalize on every element of the Star Wars experience. They announced a new addition to Disney theme parks in 2015 and broke ground on two identical extensions to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Galaxy’s Edge in Anaheim will open first in summer 2019 while the similar section in Orlando will open in fall 2019, so you’re in luck if your on the West Coast!

It seems likely that the specific dates will line up with the D23 Expo in August so that fans attending “Disneycon” will be able to visit the new section of the park. (We’re a little disappointed that Disney didn’t take this opportunity to open the park on the unofficial Star Wars Day, “May the Fourth.”) Either way, we can’t wait to buy tickets to Galaxy’s Edge! Check out this teaser video if you weren’t excited before.
