New Star Wars Fan Film Offers a Gritty Look at Stormtroopers

Steve Porter / August 31, 2018

If you liked Rogue One you’re definitely going to be interested in this new fan film, asking what it was like under the iconic white helmet of the Stormtrooper Corps. While for most of the series Stormtroopers were hapless mooks with truly terrible aim, if you’re like me you always felt a frisson of fear at the sight of those grinning masks and polished white armor. Bucketheads: A Star Wars Story offers a grim look at the front lines of the Rebellion. We can only assume these Stormtroopers can shoot straight!

While the trailer promises a ton of action and some remarkable special effects for a fan production, we have to wonder how the film will portray the men behind the visor. After all, Stormtroopers are basically the Nazi S.S.—the faceless enforcers of the tyrannical regime of the Galactic Empire. While they are still human beings subject to fear, doubt, hope, and courage, they’re also…evil. If they don’t acknowledge their moral compromises (and we’re not saying they wont’), Bucketheads risks lionizing the bad guys. That said, we have to wonder if Disney is going to shut this down before we even see it! They’re even using the same nomenclature, calling the film A Star Was Story.

Bucketheads stars Mark Meer, best known as the voice of the male version of Commander Sheperd in Mass Effect, and includes members of the popular 501st Legion Stormtrooper cosplayers. Check out the trailer below!
