The Olympics Are Returning To Los Angeles In 2028

Ben Migono / July 31, 2017

If you wondered if traffic can get any worse, wait until 2028.

The LA Times has reported that although the push was for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, it seems that the city will be hosting the event in 2028 instead. Paris and LA were going head-to-head in a furious bidding war to try and get the 2024 games, but it looks like LA made a deal to take the later time frame.

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) made an uncharacteristic move to extend bids and award two games in a row, but maybe it was because the race between Paris and LA were so compelling. Paris used their landmarks and iconic architecture as the foundation of their bid while Los Angeles focused on Hollywood and creating stories, an ideal which is central to the Olympics.

Although LA officials were insistent on not getting 2028 as a ‘consolation prize’, but they were just a little more open to the idea than their French counterparts.

The last time the Summer Games were held State side was in 1996 in Atlanta, but the last Winter Games were held in 2002 in Salt Lake City. This will be the third time that the city has hosted a Summer Olympic Games as the first came in 1932 and the second in 1984.
