The Simpsons Is Now the Longest Running Scripted Television Series Ever
The Simpsons has added a new record to their dusty collection of trophies and accolades: longest running scripted television series ever. FOX aired the 636th episode of The Simpsons on Sunday and secured the record for most episodes ever aired. The show has finally toppled Gunsmoke, a long-running Western that aired on CBS from 1955 to 1975 over 635 episodes. The Simpsons has now been on the air for almost thirty years, starting in 1989, and is now in their 29th season.
When the animated show first aired in ’89 it quickly earned critical acclaim as a witty, insightful comedy about middlebrow America. The show earned 32 Emmy Awards over the years but outlived its critical glory. That said, it’s no small feat that The Simpsons is still on the air and has become such a cultural touchstone for millions of viewers over the years.
Last week’s episode featured a wink to Gunsmoke’s prior record with a quick gag in which Maggie faces down Marhsall Matt Dillon on the mean streets of Dodge City.
