24. The 2001 Gujarat Earthquake – India

The 2001 Gujarat earthquake might have lasted just over two minutes, but it devastatingly claimed 19,727 lives, injured 166,000 and left close to a million people homeless. The massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake occurred on January 26 when the country was celebrating its 51st Republic Day.

The army was dispatched to aid in emergency services and $2 billion reconstruction kitty allocated to the region.
