Youth Team Demonstrates The Meaning Of Sportsmanship

Ben Migono / February 11, 2017

On August 28th, 2016, the U-12 Junior Soccer World Challenge held in Tokyo, Japan, saw Barcelona’s youth team matching up against Omiya Ardija from Japan. The game was a hard-fought match as the Japanese lost 1-0.

Once the final whistle blew, signaling a championship win for Barcelona, the realization of many Omiya Ardija players that they failed to win the game at home hit them hard. Many of them could be seen sobbing while their opponents revelled in their victory.

And that’s when the Barcelona side showed their true colors. Led by their young captain, Adria Capdevila Puigmal, the team went around to all the distraught players to console them hugs, handshakes, as well as give them kind words of encouragement.

They congratulated the other side for their gritty performance and rubbing their heads and even gently slapping their faces to cheer them up. We’re sure they weren’t doing it as a sign of disrespect…

Moments like these give us hope for the future.

The kids must’ve taken a page from former Barcelona captain, Xavi, after their 2015 Champion’s League final win against Juventus. Xavi went to comfort Andrea Pirlo after his side lost 3-1 in June of 2015.
