Watch the Teaser Trailer for Disney’s Live-Action ‘Aladdin’

Steve Porter / October 12, 2018

Disney has revealed the first teaser trailer for Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin—emphasis on the tease. It’s a brief but tantalizing glimpse at Disney’s latest live-action remake of an animated classic.

All we really see in this trailer is the setting—the deserts of Arabia, the city of Agrabah, and the Cave of Wonders—and a single shot of Mena Massoud (Jack Ryan) as Aladdin. The upcoming film also stars Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) as Jasmine, and Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) as Jafar.

Ritchie’s version is also a musical, including music from the original animated movie and a new song created for Jasmine by legendary songwriter and composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Best, Aladdin, Pocahontas).

Ritchie has an eye for kinetic chase sequences and snappy dialogue that could be a great fit for the story of an orphaned street urchin conning his way to riches and glory. That said, we hope this film has a little more Snatch or Sherlock Holmes than King Arthur: Legend of the Sword—an anachronistic slew of shaky-cam and clichés. Disney has kept a tight rein on their live-action properties up until now, so we’re cautiously optimistic that we can expect a fun film that doesn’t go off the rails.

Disney’s Aladdin sails into theaters a flying carpet on May 24, 2019.
