Former New England Patriots Star Aaron Hernandez Found Dead In Jail
Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end, was convicted in April 2015 of first degree murder for the death of Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013. The charge carried a life sentence and did not include the possibility of parole.
Hernandez was serving his time out of a maximum security prison at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts.
In the early morning (3:05 a.m.) of April 19, 2017, correctional officers found the former NFL player hanged in his own prison cell with bedsheets. He was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. after he was transported to UMass Memorial Hospital-Leominster. Officials were not aware that he was suicidal.
Just last week, Hernandez was found not guilty in another murder case, this time for the deaths of two men in Boston in 2012. The victims were Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado who were shot dead while they were at a stoplight on July 16, 2012. Hernandez was targeted as a suspect because one of them bumped into Hernandez earlier that night at a club and he became angry. The defense argued that it was actually Hernandez’s friend, Alexander Bradley, who committed the crime.
The jury deliberated for six days before coming to a decision based on the evidence provided and the law.
He leaves behind a daughter, Avielle Janelle Jenkins-Hernandez, 4, and long-time fiancee/mother of their child, Shayanna Jenkins. He was only 27-years old.
