Free Fire – Red Band Trailer

Steve Porter / April 11, 2017

This R-rated action crime comedy is directed by Ben Wheatley (Kill List) who also co-wrote the screenplay for the film along side Amy Jump. The film actually premiered in 2016, but has not officially made its international theatrical debut. That is set for the 21st of April, 2017. It won the “People’s Choice Award” at the Toronto International Film Festival and it’s got a runtime of 90 minutes. At the time of writing this article, it has an IMDB score of 7.3 based on the votes of just over 2,000 members. The cast is strong, to say the least, as we’ve got Enzo Cilenti, Sam Riley, Michael Smniely, Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, and more.

Free Fire takes place in Boston during 1978. A pair of gangs set up a meeting in an abandoned warehouse which quickly devolves into a shootout and a game of survival. The film is described by one IMDB user as an, “Exhilarating Mexican stand-off between characters whose aim is worse than that of the stormtroopers.” Another member said it was, “A wonderful example of a guilty pleasure movie,” and finally another put it as simply, “Free Fire is lightning in a bloody bottle.”

From the trailer we get the sense the film is quirky, visually stylish, fun, action packed and completely over the top. The wardrobe feels authentic and the accents are believable. Everyone’s characters feel as if they are just caricatures of the quintessential “gangster” stereotypes. Its level of violence seems downright cartoonish – and we freaking love it.
