Meet The 2017 World’s Ugliest Dog

Diana Rolland / July 17, 2017

In the 29th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, a big, gassy, and ugly (depending on who you ask of course) Neapolitan Mastiff took home the crown for 2017.

Named Martha, she is only 3-years old and weighs 125 pounds. When combined with her droopy face and lack of energy, she became an instant crowd favorite. She’s a rescue dog and was almost blinded during her time in Sonoma County at the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project. She’s regained her sight now after a having several surgical procedures done.

With the title, Martha and her handler, Shirley Zindler, received a $1,500 cash award, a winner’s trophy, plus a trip to NYC for a round of interviews with media outlets.

Most of the competitors consisted of smaller, older dogs whereas Martha was the only one who was too big to be carried. Martha outshined 13 other dogs on her way to victory including a 14-year-old Chinese Crested-Harke named chase and a 16-year-old Brussels Griffon-pug named Moe.

Judges based the winner on a few categories including personality, unusual attributes, first impressions, and audience reaction.

Although it’s called the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, these lovable animals are nothing but beautiful in the eyes of their owners.
