850The Wizard of Lies is a TV movie based on the non-fiction book titled “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and The Death of Trust” written by Diana Henriques. It’s produced by HBO and Tribeca Productions. The film is set for release on May 20th, 2017. The plot is straightforward, but not all that simple. The Wizard of Lies chronicles the story of the infamous Bernie Madoff and his Ponzi scheme. A Ponzi scheme is defined as a type of fraud where the person or organization operating the scheme pays its investors using money from new investors rather than using profits made from legitimate investments.

Bernie Madoff, or Bernard Lawrence Madoff, is the man responsible for the biggest fraud in the history of the United States. Madoff was the former chairman of NASDAQ, a stock broker, investment advisor, and financier. He was charged with securities fraud, investment fraud, money laundering, false statements, perjury, making false filings with the SEC, and even theft from an employee benefit plan. He was sentenced to 150 years in prison and was forced to forfeit more than $17 billion dollars.

While directed by Barry Levinson, the screenplay comes from Sam Levinson, Samuel Baum and John Burnham Schwartz. Alongside film legend Robert De Niro, we’ve got MIchelle Pfeiffer, Hank Azaria, and Kelly AuCoin. The trailer is extremely engaging; the cinematography is on point and the acting looks great, especially for De Niro, this is by far the best we’ve seen from him in years. This drama borders on True Crime and we’re excited to check it out!
