Ronda Rousey Crashes Royal Rumble
The 2018 Royal Rumble saw the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble event. Once the match had ended the winner Asuka stood in the ring with Charlotte (The Smackdown Women’s Champion) and Alexa Bliss (The Raw Women’s Champion) when they were confronted by none other than Mixed Martial Arts legend Ronda Rousey.
It’s been rumoured for the last few months that she had been considering joining the company after her pair of devastating losses in the octagon (Holly Holm – 2015 / Amanda Nunes – 2016). To be fair everyone started speculating after Holm broke her jaw with with the vicious head kick featured above. After an undefeated amateur career Rousey went on to win 12 professional fights, in a row. Having her last two fights being her only losses.
At the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Sunday, January 28th – In Front of over 17K fans, Rousey laid all the rumours to rest. Rousey strutted to the ring, stone faced. Decked out in a leather jacket and a t-shirt reminiscent of her Namesake; the late Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper – All that she was missing was the kilt (no way they were putting this lady in a skirt). The Jacket was actually a gift from Piper’s son (Colton Baird Toombs) who flew from Las Vegas to Philadelphia to deliver it to her.
Once in the ring Ronda extended her hand to the winner of the match (Asuka) only to have it batted away. The women shared some words to which Rousey responded by pointing up to the Wrestlemania banner hanging high above the crowd in in the rafters. Rousey then approaches Stephanie McMahon ringside and they shake while Stephanie looks “Surprised”. It’s pretty clear they are setting up a whole bunch with Ronda making her appearance the way she did. There are parallels between Ronda and The Women’s Rumble winner. Asuka is playing up the “Undefeated Gimmick” while being billed as a “Lethal Striker” who’s favoured finishing move was a chicken wing submission has recently switched to using an armbar.
Ronda has been training since last summer both in Southern California with Brian Kendrick and at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. Her appearance a the Royal Rumble was her first television appearance with the company although she has attended events with the company (NXT). In a post Rumble interview she said “No matter how much i try to do other things in my life this kept following me around and it’s time to take a hint from the the universe”.
In an interview with ESPN she says “This is my life now”. In another part of the interview she’s flat out asked if she’s retired from MMA. Lets just say her response is odd. Skirting the question she gives a vague non-answer, answer. “That’s what everyone else seems to say. I never retired from judo”. The host asks her if she’s still following the sport and Rousey kinda seems annoyed. But again brings up Judo almost as if she cant even think about MMA anymore. No doubt – Having probably been asked the same question a half dozen times whenever she leaves the house who can blame her for having had enough of it.
There are new rumors circling the net – It would appear that WWE is seeking to have Ronda Rousey team up with The Rock in a tag match against Stephanie McMahon and HHH at Wrestlemania on April 8th in New Orleans. Seeing as The Rock hasn’t wrestled a real match since 2013 (where he suffered an injury which delayed filming of Hercules) we find it hard to believe it will be anything more than a super gimmick. As always, we’ll keep you posted on Rousey’s new path and look forward to sharing her adventures with you.
