Sony Drops Venom Trailer and Fans are READY
Sony dropped the first trailer for Venom on Monday and people are surprisingly eager to see what’s coming next for the Sony “Spider-Verse.” The video leapt to the #1 spot on trending and has racked up over 40 million views in under a week. This isn’t really a surprise, but it does confirm that fans are still ready fore more superhero movies–no sign of “Avengers fatigue” here–and excited for another Sony Spider-Man movie.
Oh, wait, there’s no sign of Spider-Man anywhere near this movie. That’s a little unusual given that Venom is a Spider-Man villain and featured in the ill-received Spider-Man 3 in 2007. I guess Sony really wanted people to forget about that movie, and about the less-than-stellar success of Amazing Spider-Man 2. Audiences were more responsive to Sony’s half-hearted collaboration with Marvel Studios on Spider-Man: Homecoming, but Sony reserved the rights for other Spider-Man properties and the new movie is taking a brave stab at creating a new “Spider-Verse” independent from the Marvel juggernaut.
Venom looks like a very different movie, featuring sinister scientific research, black ops, and a brutal anti-hero. Watch the trailer for yourself. Venom (starring the extraordinary mumbler Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed) is set for release on October 5.
