Yup, There’s a Remake Of ‘The Mummy’ Starring Tom Cruise

Steve Porter / December 9, 2016

If you’re like me, news of this remake came out of nowhere – like when a bird flies into your head. Since rebooting films are all the rage right now, it’s not surprising to say the least, but it does put an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach. That feeling is likely thinking what we’re all thinking, “Oh my god, another reboot, why???”

The original movie was not great by any means, but it was enjoyable and it did spawn multiple films afterwards, and it more than likely set Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson onto a path of super-stardom.

The new remake is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and the script is written by Chris McQuarrie (Edge of Tomorrow, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation) and Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange, Passengers). The film will star Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond). Boutella plays the ancient princess Ahmanet who gets awakened from her crypt – and when that happens, nothing good ever follows. It’s then up to Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) to come save the day. You’ll also see Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Russell Crowe (Gladiator), Jake Johnson (TV’s New Girl), and Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) with roles in the movie.

Unlike the comically fun The Mummy movie starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz from 1999, this film will likely have suspense, adventure, and moments of horror without being labeled a “horror film” according to Kurtzman.

The reboot is scheduled to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
